As we age, our skin loses elasticity and firmness because of the decrease in collagen and elastin production, two proteins that are crucial for maintaining the skin's youthful appearance. This loss of elasticity allows the skin to sag, contributing to the formation of jowls and a saggy under chin area.
When looking into solutions for these aging issues, it can be divided into healthy habits and lifestyles, as well as aesthetic procedures. We’re going to do our due diligence and go over the habits and lifestyle choices, then take a look at PDO threads (face threading) as the chosen non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure for jowls and double chins.
As mentioned above, the loss of collagen and elastin are the primary reasons for droopy skin.
Simultaneously, the layer of fat beneath the skin also changes. Fat deposits can increase or become more pronounced in certain areas, such as beneath the chin, leading to the development of a double chin. This can be exacerbated by weight gain, but even those who maintain a stable weight can experience changes in fat distribution with age.
Furthermore, the facial muscles can weaken over time, and the gravitational pull on the less firm, less elastic skin and muscle tissues leads to sagging. This sagging is especially noticeable in the lower face, contributing to the appearance of jowls and a double chin. Bone structure changes can also play a role. As we age, facial bones can lose volume and recede, reducing support for the overlying skin and contributing to the sagging appearance.
Aside from biological aging, lifestyle factors, such as sun exposure, smoking, and diet, can accelerate these natural aging processes, making jowls and double chins more prominent.
Before delving into double chin and jowl thread lift, we should address the quick and easy habits and lifestyle choices that can help to improve the appearance of these areas by enhancing skin elasticity, muscle tone, and overall facial structure. Here are some strategies:
Healthy Diet and Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet can help reduce fat deposits that contribute to a double chin. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to support skin health and manage body fat.
Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity. Drinking plenty of water can help keep your skin hydrated and more elastic, potentially reducing sagging.
Skin Care: Use products that contain ingredients like retinol, peptides, and antioxidants. These can improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of sagging over time.
Sun Protection: Protecting your skin from the sun by using sunscreen, wearing hats, and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours can prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin, helping to maintain skin's firmness.
Stop Smoking: Smoking accelerates skin aging by breaking down collagen and reducing blood flow to the skin, so quitting can help prevent further sagging.
Good Posture: Maintaining good posture can reduce the strain on the skin and muscles of the neck and jawline, potentially reducing sagging over time.
While these habits and lifestyle choices can help improve the appearance of jowls and a double chin, they may not provide dramatic results for everyone. In cases where these areas are a significant concern, consulting with an aesthetic practitioner for professional treatments could be beneficial.
Face threading offers a novel approach to rejuvenating and lifting the lower face, effectively diminishing the sagging skin that forms jowls and double chins. These threads are made from polydioxanone, a material used safely in medical sutures for many years, which fully dissolves into the body within 4 to 6 months after the procedure.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, where fine cannulas or needles are used to insert the PDO threads into the skin at specific points along the jawline. Once in place, the threads support the tissues and gently pull back the skin to create a more defined and tighter appearance. The lifting effect is immediate, though optimal results are seen a few weeks after the procedure as collagen production increases in response to the dissolving of the PDO threads.
Beyond the immediate lift, one of the additional benefits of face threading lies in their ability to stimulate collagen production in the treated areas. As mentioned above, loss of collagen is one of the main contributors to jowls and double chins. As the threads dissolve, the polydioxanone provides a boost of collagen, improving skin texture, firmness, and elasticity over time, offering a dual-action approach to rejuvenating the lower face.
The procedure is relatively quick, taking about 30 minutes to an hour, and patients can usually return to their normal activities shortly after, with minimal downtime. While not a replacement for more invasive surgical options like a facelift, PDO threads provide a less invasive alternative for those seeking to address the early signs of aging without the risks and recovery time associated with surgery.
PDO Threads for Jowls
Getting more specific into the jowl thread lift, this mid-face procedure uses both bi-directional barbs for the strongest lift, while using multi-directional barbs to secure the tissue into place. What’s interesting about this particular part of the face is that there are many innovative techniques that can be used:
Traditional Vector: Threads are inserted from the top to the bottom, so the barbs are pointed upwards. By using the insertion hole as an anchoring point, the tissue is pulled and latched onto the barbs to hold them in its new position.
Reverse Vector: This technique is when the thread direction is reversed. So instead of inserting the thread from top to bottom, it’ll be inserted from bottom to top. This method can give a strong lift, because it allocates less of the barbs to anchoring and more for lifting.
How PDO Threads Help Double Chin
When it comes to the under-chin area, the skin under the jaw is pulled to create a tighter appearance, reducing the double chin. Common approaches to tighten the under-chin area are to insert the thread from behind the ear and grab onto the tissue and pull it backwards or to insert the thread from the center of the neck and pull it towards both ears like a hammock. Oftentimes, smooth threads will be combined in the treatment to promote a skin tightening effect.
As with any cosmetic procedure, the importance of consulting with a certified professional cannot be overstated. Their expertise will guide you through the process, from initial consultation to post-treatment care, ensuring your experience is tailored to your unique facial structure and aesthetic goals.
Remember, the journey to enhancing your appearance is as much about confidence as it is about cosmetic change. Face threading offers a path to both, promising results that are both subtle and impactful, allowing a non-surgical option to rejuvenate your youth.
